Electricity and Our Life

Since its invention, electricity has found wide applications in industry, agriculture and scientific research. It is so essential to our daily life that , without electricity…we would not enjoy modern comforts because home applianc es would not work. Without electricity…., we could not cook food, wash clothes and watch TV.

Generally speaking, there are three ways to save electricity…. First, we should produce electricity-saving home appliances. Second, remember to turn off the light when you leave a room. Finally, we should change our way of life to choose a low-carbon life. Avoid as much as possible the “artificial life” powered by electricity.

All in all, electricity will bring us bright, make our life colorful.

Competition and cooperation

Competition is now a common phenomenon in our society. We compete when we play games, we try to do better than others in our study, and we often compete for jobs, customers, money, and so on so forth. To some extent, we can say, competition is an important motive force of our life.

We often find competition and cooperation occurring at the same time. For example, during a football game, one team is competing with the other, but each member of the team must cooperate with his teammates. In most ca ses, we can’t compete without cooperation. Therefore, competition and cooperation are equally important in our life.

While we are advocating competition, we can’t forget cooperation. In modern society, cooperation plays a very important part, because most work is finished with and through other people. So we must combine competition with cooperation in order to reach the “double win” goals successfully.

How Will Our Life Go on without Internet?

If asked whether the Internet is the greatest discovery of the 20th century, my answer would be yes. The Internet has drawn the world closer together, realized countless incredible dreams, and provided modern people with a great many conveniences and a brilliant life.

Today, many people simply feel they cannot live without the Internet. Governments publish their latest policies and decisions online for worldwide recognition. Political campaigns are often done online to gain wider public support. Companies and enterprises resort to the Internet for more business opportunities and potential customers home and abroad. Universities and researchers turn to the Internet if they’d seek international cooperation or funding. Common folks like us also rely on the cyber world in various ways, for communication, entertainment, banking and shopping. The power of the Internet is all pervasive, yet its many negative effects are already visible. For example, Internet addicts tend to withdraw to their own fantasy world rather than communicate with a real person. Children are exposed to online pornography and violence. Internet frauds are an everyday occurrence. In view of all this, you are advised to use the Internet with wisdom. Keep it at a safe distance and never lose yourself.

Protecting the Environment

Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence.

The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations. Fortunately, more and more people have realized these problems. Measures have been taken to cope with these problems by the government. Laws have been passed to stop pollution. I hope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better.

Private Cars

With the increase in the general standard of living, some ordinary Chinese families begin to afford a car. Yet opinions of the development of a private car vary from person to person.

It gives a much greater degree of comfort and mobility. The owner of a car is no longer forced to reply on public transport, and hence no irritation caused by waiting for buses or taxis. However, others strongly object to developing private cars. They maintain that as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual hamp3 to the health of people.

Whether private cars should be developed in Chicago is a difficult question to answer, yet the desire for the comfort and independence a private car can bring will not be eliminated.

People who like traveling have their reasons. They maintain that traveling can help them expand there scope of knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning. They go on to point out that touring will provide more chance for them to enjoy food and try on clothes that they otherwise can not possibly have.

Those, however, who dislike traveling have different opinions, they would argue that traveling means a considerable amount of money and energy . for example, traffic and accommodation require money and walking while seeing sights often tires you .

In practice traveling offers more enjoyment than suffering .if your finance and health permit, you might as well do some traveling from time to time. It will at least enable you to get familiar with people and things that you will probably grow to like and love.

Weather

Weather affects all of us in one way or another, directly or indirectly. For example, good weather makes people happy and gay, while bad weather makes people sick and depressed. Besides, on a fine day, one can get out for a walk or play a game in the open air. On a rainy day, however, he can only stay indoors. In a word, weather is part of life for all of us.

The first thing that many people do after getting up in the morning is to see what the weather is like. With a knowledge of the weather, people can arrange work and life of the day. If it is fine, he may decide to go on a picnic. If it is cloudy, he will have to take a raincoat or an umbrella with him when he is leaving the house. Whatever the weather may be, one tends to adjust his activities to it accordingly.

In order to know what the weather will be, special people are hired to provide this information. They collect data, analyze them and provide the weather of the coming day. This information, which is announced on the radio or on TV, is usually very accurate. Thanks to the efforts of those professionals, we can always know the weather in advance and get prepared for it.

Health or Wealth

I prefer health to wealth if I have to choose between them. It is true that wealth makes life easier and more comfortable, but health is even more important. Only when one has good health can he pursue wealth and happiness.

Wealth cannot be acquired without health. As we know, to gain wealth usually means working hard. If one does not have a strong body, how can he work hard? How can he have enough energy to overcome all the difficulties on his way towards success? Only with a sound body may one get a chance to enjoy the better life provided by his wealth because health ensure wealth but not vice versa. Therefore, health is the basis for attaining wealth.

Even if one is born into a rich family, wealth alone cannot make him happy. Imagine a rich man who can do nothing but stay in bed. How can he enjoy his life? What can his money do for him? So long as one is healthy, there are always chances for him to attain everything including wealth.

Spring Festival

Spring Festival is the new year in Chinese lunar calendar. Thousands of years ago, Chinese people started to count days according to the changes of moon and in this way thus created a lunar calendar. Spring Festival is considered to be the first day in Chinese lunar calendar.

It is an occasion for all the members of the family to gather together to celebrate the festival. Because it is the most important festival and people take the longest leave in the whole year, it becomes a proper time for family members who live far away from each other to take the opportunity to reunite.

Besides, it is the time of the year at which relatives and friends exchange visits. Most of the people are busy with their work or other daily chores and seldom have time to pay visits to their friends and relatives. The long leave during Spring Festival provides them with good chance to visit each other and share their experiences of the year.

Travel

Travel has become a world-wide activity. Never before have so many people traveled to so many different parts of the world. With new modes of fast, comfortable transport more and more people are tempted to leave their homes to see more of the wonderful world.

People travel for many reasons, but perhaps the most common is traveling for pleasure. It provides an effective way to get your mind off your work. When you return, you are refreshed and energetic and ready to work harder.

Travel is also one of the best means for learning. One may have heard or read about something, but one can never get an accurate picture of it until one sees it. I believe that the knowledge obtained from actual experience is more valuable than that obtained from books.

Friendship

Friendship is essential for the existence of society. People live in communities and work in co-operation so that they could protect themselves from nature. The successful accomplishment of any task calls for support from many people. Friendship is a guarantee of harmonious efforts.

In the widest sense, all people are friends. All people co-operate and help each other directly or indirectly. Competition and friendship are complementary though competition is universal.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. In time of hard times, it is easy for us to test friendship, to test whether it is true or not. No matter what happens, true friendship will persist. A real friend will always be ready to help others, risking losing his own interest, even his life.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Living in a City

Living in a city has many advantages. Urban residents enjoy good housing, medical care, convenient transport and lots of cultural activities. Children living in cities can get better education, because almost all the famous universities are located in the cities.

However, there are also many disadvantages if one lives in a city. For example, cities are usually polluted and noisy. Urban residents can hardly enjoy fresh air and birds’singing as rural people do in the countryside.

In conclusion, if a person tries to decide whether to live in a city or not, he should take into consideration both the advantages and disadvantages of urban life before he makes the final decision.

One ―Child Family

In China one-child family has many advantages. China has a large population. In order to control the growth of population and improve the living standard of the people, the government requires that every family have one child. Most people take a positive attitude towards the one-child policy. They realize that a family with one child is better than those with more children. Parents have much time show concern about the growth of their child. In addition, they can spend more time on their studies and work.

But there are some negative views about the one-child family. Some people argue that it may lead to some social problems in future. For example, the parents will feel lonely when their child gets married. Moreover, parents tend to spoil their only child.

In my opinion, one-child family has a lot of advantages. It benefits people as well as the country. Besides, it is of great importance to the development of our country.

Hobbies

Almost everyone has a hobby. Hobbies can bring us happiness and entertainment. By keeping a hobby, one can, for a while, switch away from one’s hard work or study and be refreshed for a new start.

Different people have different hobbies. Many people in the world enjoy music. They listen to records, sing karaoke, and play musical instruments for fun in their free hours. Millions of people take great pleasure in doing physical activities, such as running, swimming, bowling, playing ball, and so forth. A lot of people also like to collect stamps or other items.

As for me, I like stamp collecting. Getting a new stamp added to my collection always makes me excited for a long time. Every single stamp seems to be a beautiful flower, a story and a good friend. Whenever I open my stamp-album and look at the stamps, I feel I am immersed in happy reveries.

Why Should a Person Go to School

A person needs to learn both knowledge and moral principles in order to be useful and upright. These are the basic qualities he needs to survive in the society and to make further achievements. Schools are places where one can learn useful skills and get to know the meaning of life. By studying at school he acquires many abilities such as how to write and speak properly, or how to solve math problems. One also learns to distinguish right from wrong.

In this way, it is very important for a person to go to school. As we all can see, going to school is the best way for people to acquire what he needs.

A Teacher’s Responsibility

It is a teacher’s major responsibility to impart knowledge to students. A teacher is a medium that connects students to higher knowledge. He should teach what he knows to his students. Besides, a teacher should teach the students to be upright. He ought to set up a good example for the students as an honest, kind and responsible person and tell the students what to do or not to do.

A teacher should also be willing to help students solve various problems. Young people may meet many problems on their way to become adults. When this happens, they may come to their teachers for help. In this case, teachers are responsible to give necessary assistance.

Is Money Everything

Money is a necessary means to get material goods. No matter it is food, clothes or furniture, each of them costs money. You can get none of them for free.

But there are things that money can not buy. Not all the things in the world can be evaluated and estimated by money. You can not acquire things like love, happiness and friendship merely with money.

So we may conclude that money is not everything. It is useful to get many things you need or you like. You can survive without it. But when it comes to feelings and emotions, it loses its magic power as to material things.

Laid-off Workers and Re-employment

There is an increasing number of workers not only the middle-aged but also the young who are laid off their jobs. And these employed are also worried a great deal that someday they may lose their job. This phenomenon has caught a great social attention.

The increasing number of laid-off workers is caused mainly by the industrial restructuring and economic development across China. In order to improve efficiency, many enterprises have to reduce workforce. Another reason is that some enterprises claim bankruptcy, which made millions of workers jobless. Laborers from countries are also contributing to the increasing numbers of the laid-offs.

Off-job doesn’t men no job. There are plenty of opportunities for the laid-off workers to be re-employed. But they have to get job training to make themselves qualified and competitive in human resources market.

Why Should We Learn English

English language has now become an international language as it is spoken in most countries in the world. For example, English is the native language in the U.S., the Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. and it is also the official language in many other countries and international affaires.

As we know, most of the valuable books, newspaper and magazines are printed in English. If we want to read them to increase our knowledge, we must learn English. If we want to do business with foreign countries, we should also learn English. Why? It is just because English is spoken by the majority of foreigners.

We people in China come into contact with more and more foreign countries, English is considered as the most important and indispensable tool to communication. This is the reason why there are so many people in our country who learn English. The know that learning English helps make life more convenient.

Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking is a common phenomenon. People have smoked cigarettes for a long time. The tobacco which is used to make cigarettes was first grown in what is now part of the United States. Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, saw the Indians smoking. Soon the dried leaves were transported to Europe where smoking began to catch on. In the late 1800s, the Turk made cigarettes popular.

However, it does more harm than good. Cigarette smoke contains at least two harmful substances, tar and nicotine. Tar, which forms as the tobacco burns, damages the lungs and therefore affects breathing. Nicotine, which is found in the leaves, causes the heart to beat faster and increases the breathing rate.

Smoking cigarettes is dangerous. Therefore, efforts should be made to restrict smoking. The U.S. Public Health Service stated that cigarette smoking is the cause of lung cancer and several other deadly diseases. The U.S. government now requires that each package of cigarettes bear a special warning about the dangers of smoking.

Is Failure a Bad Thing

Failure is a common thing in our daily life. As a student, we sometimes fail to get high scores in our examinations. When we play games, we can’t avoid being beaten by the others. And there are times when we fail to do more satisfactory work. All these failures happen naturally and almost every one of us has such experience.

However, there are different attitudes towards failure. Some people lose heart in failure, and they think the world is at its end. Some people don’t take failure seriously, and they just let it be, while some others learn much from failure, and therefore see the light of hope through failure.

In my opinion, what really counts is not failure itself, but what we think of failure and do after failure. As long as we don’t give up and believe in ourselves, and in the meantime learn some thing from failure, we’ll certainly make progress in the end. So I’m never afraid of failure. I believe failure is not a bad thing.

The Way to Success

It is true that everyone tries to achieve success in his/her career. But one finally attains his/her aim while the other fails. Why? Because the one continues his cause to the end through long period of hard struggles. But the other is easily disappointed and stops halfway.

In addition to strong will, perseverance and diligence are also essential to success. A man of strong will and perseverance always has an inflexible spirit. He sticks to his cause no matter how tough it might be. If we want to succeed finally in our career, we should hold to our goal.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Success belongs to those who can suffer long years of patient toil and constant efforts.
