A 10-year old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm i
n a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy did well, so he couldn’t understand why, after 3 months of trains, the master had taught him only one move.“Master,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll need to know,” the master replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. This time, his opponent was bigger, strong, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be outmatched. Concerned about the boy, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the master came forward.

“No,” the master insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a fatal mistake. He dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy won the match. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and his master reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“Master, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the master answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.

D. Because all he cared about is winning the final

18. What caused the defeat of the boy’s opponent in the final?

A. Over-confidence

B. Impatience

C. Inexperience

D. The time-out

19. Why did the master only teach the boy one move?

A. The boy could not do other moves with only one arm

B. It was the only move the master knew well

C. It was the move his opponents were not good at

20. What does the story show?

根据以下内容回答题:It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times
and to blame them for most of the misunderstanding between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that they are possessive and dominant;that they do not trust their children to deal with crisis;that they talk too much about certain problems——and that they have no sense of humor,at least in parent-child relationships. I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young. Young people often irritate parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles,in enter-tainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then,if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior,at least in a small way,and that they are leaders in style. and taste. Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do.If they did approve,it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog(劣势者):you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’contr01.But it ignores the fact that you are nOW beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can impress others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative,so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.

This passage is primarily meant for__________ .

根据下列短文,补全 46~50 题。

Why do People Shrink?

Did you ever see the movie Honey, I shrunk the kids? It's about a wacky(乖僻的) dad (who's also a scientist) who accidentally(偶然的) shrinks his kids with his homemade miniaturizing(使小型化) invention. Oops! The kids spend the rest of the movie as tiny people who are barely visible while trying to get back to their normal size.

_________ (1)It takes place over years and may add up to only one inch or so off of their adult height (maybe a little more, maybe less), and this kind of shrinking can't be magically reversed, although there are things that can be done to stop it or slow it down. But why does shrinking happen at all?

_________(2).As people get older, they generally lose some muscle and fat from their bodies as part of the natural aging process. Gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) take hold, and the bones in the spine, called vertebrae(椎骨), may break down or degenerate, and start to collapse into one another. _________ (3).But perhaps the most common reason why some older people shrink is because of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis(骨质疏松症) occurs when too much spongy(海绵) bone tissue (which is found inside of most bones) is broken down and not enough new bone material is made. _________ (4).Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured. Older people –especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with-are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by, a person with osteoporosis shrinks a little bit.

Did you know that every day you do a shrinking act? You aren't as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. _________ (5).Don't worry, though. Once you get a good night's rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you're standing tall again.

188. Is it difficult for you to get up in the morning? Do you sometimes oversleep? Are you often late for work or school? Yes? Then Hiroyuki Sugiyama of Japan has a special bed for you. Hiroyuki’s bed will get you up in the morning! Here is how it works: The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music or other pleasant sounds. A few minutes later, a second recording plays. The second recording can be loud music or unpleasant sounds. If you don’t get up after the second recording, you’ll be sorry. A mechanical “foot” is in the bed. The mechanical foot kicks you in the head. Then the bed waits a few more minutes. What! You’re still in bed! Slowly, the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally, the bed is vertical. You slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are awake and out of bed. Hiroyuki made his bed because he wanted to win a contest. He works for Honda Motor Company. Once every two years, Honda has a contest—the “All Honda Idea Contest”. In 1996 Hiroyuki won a prize for his bed. [共5题]

To begin with, moral values in America are like those in any culture. But the stories
and traditions that teach them are unique to each culture. Not only that, but culture has an effect on how people show these virtues.

One of the most basic moral values for Americans is honesty. The wall-known legend about George Washington and a cherry tree teaches this value clearly.

Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember Aesop’s fable about the turtle and the rabbit that had a race The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a sleep. But the turtle finally won because he did not give up.

Compassion(同情心)may be the queen of American virtues. In 1992, people in Iowa sent truckloads of water to help Floridians hit by a hurricane. The next summer, during the mid-west of flooding, Florida returned the favor.
