1. realize [ˈriːəlaɪz] v.(realizes, realizing, realized, realized)

v. 了解,领会,认识到,意识到;实现,使成为现实;(所担心的事)发生,产生;变卖(财产),变现;以……价格卖出;把…………具体表现出来

辨:reason,excuse和cause

reason意为“原因,理由”,强调指从逻辑推理上得出的结论性原因,不是直接说明起因。例:Without evidence, there’s no reason for suspecting him.(没有证据就没有理由怀疑他。)

excuse 意为“借口,理由”,多指借口性的理由。常用于为自己辩解,希望得到谅解时所提出的种种理由。例:His excuse for forgetting her birthday is that he was too busy.(他辩解说因为太忙才忘了她的生日。)

cause 意为“起因,动机”,多指因果关系,侧重于指直接导致事情发生的原因,与所发生的事之间有因果关系。例:Inadequate preparation is one of the most common causes of failure in an exam.(准备不充分是导致考试失败最常见的原因之一。)

例句:I want to know the reason why you didn’t attend the meeting.

我想知道你为什么没来参加会议。

The police reasoned that the suspect was the murderer after a series of investigation.

经过一系列调查,警察断定这个嫌疑犯就是杀人凶手。

7. reassure [ˌriːəˈʃʊə(r)] v.(reassures, reassuring, reassured, reassured)

v. 使安心,使放心,打消顾虑

固定搭配:reassure sb. (about sth.) 使安心,使放心,打消顾虑

辨:rebel,revolt和resist

rebel 意为“造反,反叛”,指反对或拒绝服从权威,如政府、制度、父母等。例:Most teenagers like to rebel against their parents.(大多数青少年都喜欢反抗父母。)

revolt意为“反抗,违抗”,指采取暴力行动反抗当权者,侧重于对压迫或不能容忍的情况的反抗。一般规模相对较小的,持续时间较短。例:The slaves threatened to revolt.(奴隶威胁说要造反。)

resist意为“抵抗,阻挡”,指被攻击时进行反击,或者用武力阻止某事的发生,一般为褒义。例:The speaker inspired the people to resist oppression with his speech.(这位演说家用他的演讲激励人们奋起反抗。)

例句:She rebelled against the harsh upbringing of her parents.

她曾反抗父母的苛刻教育。

My brother has always been the rebel of the family.

我弟弟向来是家里的叛逆者。

9. rebellion [rɪˈbeljən] n.(rebellions)

构词:re(回,向后)+ bell(战争,打斗)+ion(名词后缀,表动作)→ 反抗,反叛

辨:rebellion,riot和revolt

rebellion意为“谋反,叛乱”,通常指公开且有组织的大规模武装叛乱,最终大多以失败而告终。例:The army put down an armed rebellion last week. (上个星期军队镇压了一次武装叛乱。)

riot意为“暴动,骚乱”,通常指一群没有组织的人突然闹事或掀起暴乱。例:The government was able to take preventive action and avoid a possible riot.(政府及时采取防范措施,避免了可能发生的骚乱。)

revolt意为“反抗,违抗”,指采取暴力行动反抗当权者,侧重于对压迫或不能容忍的情况的反抗。一般规模相对较小的,持续时间较短。例:The slaves threatened to revolt.(奴隶威胁说要造反。)

例句:The country rose in rebellion and the government forces failed to contain it timely.

10. recall [rɪˈkɔːl] v.(recalls, recalling, recalled, recalled)/n.(recalls)

n. 记性,记忆力;召回令,回归请求

常用搭配:beyond recall 记不住;想不起来

recall from 从……处召回

recall to mind 回想起;记得

辨:recall,remember,memorize,remind和recollect

recall意为“回想起,记起”,指想方设法回想起已经遗忘的事物,比remember更加文雅。例:She could not recall what she did just now.(她想不起刚刚自己做过什么。)

remember意为“记得,记牢”,含义较广泛,多指无意识地回忆起往事或通过主观努力去记忆。例:Do you still remember my name?(你还记得我的名字吗?)

memorize意为“熟记,背熟”,指下功夫或有意识地熟记事物的细节,以便准确地记住。例:He studied his map, trying to memorize the way to church.(他研究了地图,试图记住去教堂的那条路。)

remind意为“提醒,使想起”,指经过提醒而回忆起某件已经遗忘的事情。例:Your smile reminds me of your mother.(你的笑容使我想起了你的母亲。)

recollect意为“回忆,想起”,指在记忆中搜索并设法想起一时想不起的人或事,强调回忆的过程。例:She could no longer recollect the details of that accident.(她想不起那次事故的细节了。)

例句:He was recalled to a secret mission.

他被召回执行秘密任务。

Everyone admired her amazing powers of recall.
