英语六级翻译练习讲解：中国的高速公路

高速公路（express way）是一个走向现代化的桥梁，也是发展现代交通业的必要条件。近几年，中国高速公路蓬勃发展，截止到2012年，中国高速公路的总里程（total mileage）已经达到9.6万公里，位居世界第二。高速公路网建成后，通车里程将达10.8万公里，届时将覆盖超过90%的拥有20万以上城镇人口的城市。高速公路为道路运输创造了新的发展机遇和空间，也为沿线的经济腾飞增添了活力。现在，它已成为拉动内需、促进经济快速发展的重要因素之一。

By then, over 90% of the cities with an urban population of more than 200,000 will have been covered. Express ways create new development opportunities and space for road transportation, adding vitality to the economic take-off along the way. Nowadays, it has become one of the most important factors in driving the domestic demand and fuelling the rapid development of economy.

1.第一句话由两个分句组成，谓语均为“是”，故可将“一个走向现代化的桥梁”和“发展现代交通业的必要条件”处理为并列结构，由not only...but also...连接，作“是”is的表语。

2.第二个句子较长，可将“中国高速公路蓬勃发展”处理为主干，将“中国高速公路的总里程…9.6万公里”处理为with引导的介词短语；“位居世界第二”则可采用现在分词作状语ranking...，放在句末，补充说明“总里程”的地位。

3.第三句的“…建成后”为时间状语，可翻译为after引导的时间状语从句after the construction of...is completed。后两个分句前者说高速公路网建成后的通车里程，后者说将覆盖多少城市，意思不是那么紧密，可拆译为两个句子。“将覆盖超过90%的拥有20万以上城镇人口的城市”中的定语“拥有20万以上城镇人口的”较长，可用介词短语with an urban population of...表达。

4.倒数第二“高速公路为道路运输…增添了活力”包含两个谓语动词“创造了”和“增添了”，因此可译为两个并列谓语create...and add...,但这样处理稍显平淡，不如将“也为…增添了活力”处理为表伴随的现在分词短语adding vitality to...来得紧凑和有逻辑性。
